K7RA Propagation Report 16 Nov 2019

Propagation de K7RA

16 November 2019
Even with little to no solar activity, it is amazing how many long distance HF contacts are possible, even without using weak signal modes such as FT8.

Recent DXpeditions, such as the ones on Pitcairn Island and Marquesas, had little trouble piling up the contacts, even on 10 meters. It helps that we are in the Fall season.
No sunspots over the past week, and average daily solar flux was about the same as last week's report, 70.3 compared to 70.4. Geomagnetic indices were still quiet, with average daily planetary A index at 4 (last week was 4.1) and middle latitude A index at 3 (compared to 2.7).
Predicted solar flux is 71 on November 15 to December 3, 70 on December 4-18, and 71 on December 19-29.
Predicted planetary A index is 5, 12 and 8 on November 15-17, 5 on November 18-19, then 18, 25, 18, 12 and 10 on November 20-24, 8 on November 25-26, 5 on November 27 through December 16, then 15, 25, 18, 12 and 10 on December 17-21, 8 on December 22-23, and 5 on December 24-29.

This forecast is the same as the one appearing on Thursday in the ARRL Letter. Check daily updates at, ftp://ftp.swpc.noaa.gov/pub/forecasts/45DF/ These are updated daily after 2100 UTC, most recently between 2110-2151 UTC.
Geomagnetic activity forecast for the period November 15-December 10, 2019 from OK1HH.
"Geomagnetic field will be:
Quiet on: November 18-19, 29-30, December 1 Quiet to unsettled on: November 15, 27-28, December 4-10 Quiet to active on: November 16 (-17, 25-26), December 2-3 Unsettled to active on: November 20, 24 Active to disturbed: November 21-23
"Solar wind will intensify on: November 21-26, (27-29).
"Parenthesis means lower probability of activity enhancement."
Bil Paul, KD6JUI is still operating regularly from his kayak in Northern California. QST published an article about his kayak and antenna in the November 2016 issue.
"I was again operating from a kayak (Saturday, November 9) this time from Lake Berryessa in northern California. The first contact I had (17 meter CW at noon Pacific time) was with 'Moz' VK3CWB in Australia. I was, as before, running 10 watts into a 34-foot end-fed half-wave wire vertical set up in a fallen-over tree at the edge of the lake. Although at first he had trouble copying my call sign, he did give me a 539 report.
"What amazed me was that directly behind me was a hill that I thought would cut my signal in his direction. Perhaps my signal was bouncing off the hills on the other side of the lake.
"One of my reasons for writing in is to show that QRP signals even in this time of low solar activity can get through overseas, especially if one is operating from a watery location.
"I go out in the kayak around once a week and operate. The antenna is loadable on 17, 20 and 30 meters. There was plenty of activity on all those bands yesterday, but I only had contacts on 17 and 30. My buddy caught his first trout on his end of things. A good day all around.
"I get a very good QSL-card return from foreign stations when I send them my kayak QSL card."
KA3JAW reported an 11 meter sporadic-E opening on the evening of November 13. Local sunset was 4:44 PM and the opening began 2 hours and 31 minutes later, and ended 4 hours and 16 minutes after sunset. He is in Easton, Pennsylvania and heard transmissions from Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia.
ARRL Phone Sweepstakes is this weekend. See http://www.arrl.org/sweepstakes .

3D2/R  - Tony, 3D2AG expected to be QRV as 3D2AG/p from  Rotuma  from around
         28 November to 5 January 2020 [425DXN 1487].  The ship scheduled to
depart on 23 November, however, "has inexplicably (and at two days'
notice only) been brought forward to the 16th of November!  As this
is too  early because of  QRL and other  preparations",  Tony says,
"there will be a delay in the start  of the operation.  There are a
number of other options being looked at, sailing either towards the
end  November  or  early  December".  Updates  will  be  posted  to
         https://www.qrz.com/db/3d2ag/p.

Bouvet Island DXpedition news

Dom, 3Z9DX, posted the following comment on FaceBook/eHam.net on November 4th [edited]:
"After a short and solid in-team discussion we decided that all donors, who supported our first attempt to Bouvet in March 2019 with 199 USDs and more, will take part in a similar lottery as we've announced recently in terms of the 2nd Bouvet's attempt. We simply feel we should honor all of our supporters who qualify to enter the lottery.
So, each donor who donated at least 199 USDs and more until March 2019 is able to win a FREE 10 days vacation + sailing trip on our own Rebel Catamaran with a Captain and crew among the Fiji islands. The rules are simple and the same as the current lottery for supporters of the 2nd Bouvet attempt. We will choose 3 donors + 1 accompanying person each, that is 6 people in total. Dates are to be arranged with participants once chosen.
The prize includes 10 days vacation and/or the sailing trip around some amazing Fiji islands (Prize do not include participants insurances, airfares from/to home destinations and food. This can be arranged by our crew on request).
The entire process of the prize drawing and the winners' announcements will be live-streamed online. The prize draw will take place in approx. 2 weeks and will be announced a couple of days earlier. Stay tuned and already crossing fingers for the winners :-)"

Mount Athos activity

Monk Iakovos, SV2RSG, has been active as SV2RSG/A from the Holy Monastery of Koutloumousiou of Mount Athos. Activity has been on mostly 20 meters at various times between 1100-1830z (some 40m).
It is interesting that he is now signing with a "/A" ("/A" as meaning of alternative).
Back in July, OPDX was informed that per the DXCC Desk staff, they do not yet have any documentation from Monk Iakovos, SV2RSG, that states he is in fact active from Mount Athos. However, several sources are reporting that Bart Jahnke, W9JJ, ARRL Radiosport and Field Services Manager, has recently stated "operations by SV2RSG/A (if from Mount Athos must identify '/A') are accepted by ARRL DXCC."
It was verified on Friday, November 8th, (thanks to Goose, W8AV, a Great Lakes DXCC Checker) from the DXCC Desk that SV2RSG/A is good for DXCC.
QSL via SV2RSG/A direct (see QRZ.com).

Saint Martin Island

Operators John/K9EL, Paul/K9NU, Gary/N9AOL, John/W9ILY and Marco/FS4WBS will be active as TO9W from Orient Bay, Saint Martin Island (NA-105) between December 4-13th.
John, K9EL, provides the following update, dated November 4th:
"In less than 30 days, we will be in Saint Martin! We arrive late on December 3rd and we will spend all day December 4th and probably into the 5th setting up antennas.
We will put one station on the air as soon as possible, most likely 20 meters. Ultimately we will be able to have 3 stations operating simultaneously. All antennas will come down on December 13th. We have a new large fiberglass mast for an improved 160 meter TX antenna. We will alternate between CW and FT8 on 160 meters.
Please make sure to update your logging programs to recognize TO9W as Saint Martin. Our intention is activate ClubLog real-time log updates, assuming a steady Internet connection. We plan to upload to LoTW daily.
All questions, comments and requests for schedules should be sent to our pilots, K9NB or W9MK. Our QSL Manager is W9ILY.
73 from the TO9W team
W9ILY, K9NU, N9AOL, K9EL, W9MK, K9NB
Their activity will be on 160-6 meters but with a focus on 160/80/40 meters. They plan is to operate FT8 in the Fox/Hound mode on DXpedition frequencies. SSB and RTTY are also planned. There will be NO operation on 60 meters or PSK modes. When the normal FT8 frequencies are busy, they will operate Fox/Hound mode on: 3567, 7056, 10131, 14090, 18095, 21091, 24911 and 28091 kHz. If those frequencies are busy, they will announce their operating frequency.
Also, look for them to be in the ARRL 160 Meter Contest between December 6-8th. QSL via W9ILY, LoTW or ClubLog OQRS.
