Threats to Amateur Radio

If there isn't enough noise already...

The Threats to Radiocommunication

IARU Region 1 President Don Beattie G3BJ looks at the threat to the RF Spectrum posed by pollution from Wireless Power Transfer for Electric Vehicles equipment

WPT (EV) is the technology that will allow cars to be charged without the need for connecting leads. At present it seems that there is a real prospect that these devices – destined to be installed in home garages – will obscure radio communications in the home environment.

Radio Sawa News

Radio Sawa to scale back regional broadcasts

To save $9.5 million in 2019, the U.S. government’s Arabic language broadcaster Radio Sawa plans to restrict its FM and AM transmissions to Iraq. This will mean the end of Radio Sawa’s radio service, AM and FM, to the rest of the Middle East.
In addition, Radio Sawa’s country-centric feeds for Egypt, the Gulf, Jordan, Lebanon, Mauritania, Morocco and Sudan will be terminated, both on air and online at www.radiosawa.com. The remaining Radio Sawa Iraq feed will be streamed.
Cuts to Radio Sawa are part of a bigger reduction for the Broadcasting Board of Governors in proposed federal budgets for FY 2018 and 2019. Billing itself as “America’s civilian international media agency,” the BBG oversees the Voice of America (VOA), Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL), Radio Free Asia (RFA), Alhurra TV and Radio Sawa (under Middle East Broadcasting Networks — MBN), and Radio and TV Martí. The BBG budget was proposed at $661.1 million for FY 2019, down from $685.2 million in 2018 and $786.6 million in 2017.
A BBG information page says, “Radio Sawa attracts young audiences by playing contemporary Arabic and Western music with news and information programs. It is one of the most popular radio stations in the countries where it can be heard on FM.” So why is the BBG reducing Radio Sawa from a Middle Eastern regional broadcaster to an Iraq-only station?
“Tough trade-offs are always necessary in austere budget climates,” replied Nasserie Carew, BBG’s director of global communications and public affairs. “But BBG and MBN leadership are committed to and will continue reaching people in media-restrained countries.”
With money being tight, Radio Sawa’s non-Iraq radio broadcasts were a natural target, according to interested observers.
“Eliminating the Radio Sawa network of transmitters in all countries except Iraq will save almost $5 million,” said Kim Andrew Elliott. He’s a retired VOA audience research analyst and broadcaster who now produces Shortwave Radiogram a weekly program of text and images via analog shortwave radio.
“Radio Sawa uses leased FM transmitters in Arab countries, plus mediumwave (AM) relays,” he said, “and these are expensive.”

PIRATE ---> Francois Botha, ZS4X has notified the  SARL Office that  his old

African Regulator) has  confirmed  that  ZS6BUU has not  been reissued. [TNX

VP6D ---> CW enthusiast Ken Karr, NG2H  has joined  the  VP6D DXpedition  to
Ducie Island (20 October-3 November) [425DXN 1397].  He participated in  the
VK0EK  expedition  to  Heard Island (2016).  "Providing an  All Time New One
(ATNO)  is  a  key  objective of  VP6D", the  organizers say.  "We will keep
stations on 20m SSB and CW  as  propagation permits.  Additionally,  FT8 may
also provide DXers an ATNO opportunity  during periods  of poor conditions".
The fundraising campaign continues. See https://www.vp6d.com/ for the latest
information from the team and details on how to contribute.

Z60A LOTW AND QSL RELEASE ---> "It is now 10-days from the last QSO made  at
Z60A, the  Republic of Kosovo's  first  activation",  OH2BH  reported on  23
March. "Because this is an overall new DXCC entity, it has resulted in  many
requests  for  checking missing  QSOs  due to pirates,  a variety of logging
errors and busted calls. We have extended this period for another week as we
try to enter the cleanest possible QSO data to LoTW.  The magic day for  the
complete LoTW upload will be 1 April 2018.  We will continue processing  log
errors  for  another  7-days prior  to  the upload.  Queries can be made  at
z60a[@]sral.fi".  The paper QSL cards are  being printed, and  "we expect to
have them here around 1 April as well.  We will proceed with mailing as fast
as we can". The  Mission  Goodwill Kosovo  has been invited  to present  the
story of "The Republic of Kosovo and Z60A" at the  Visalia International  DX
Convention;  Z61VB, OH2BH and K9JF will  be  the  Saturday  evening  Banquet
speakers.

BULLETIN

Additional KPH and K6KPH Frequencies Return to the Air

After three days of intensive repair and restoration work in the antenna field at the Bolinas transmit site we are happy to report that all KPH, KFS and K6KPH Morse frequencies will return to the air on Saturday 31 March.

Note: The Marconi T antenna has been repaired allowing KPH to return to MF.

As many readers know, we had a large program of antenna repair scheduled for 2018.  But years of deferred maintenance caught up with us before we could begin and we had to cease operations until vital repairs were made.  This work included not only the antennas and feed lines but support structures as well.

Repairs required two bucket trucks and a crew for the Pacific Slope Tree Cooperative.  These guys are outstanding and were immediately able to adapt to antenna work from their usual tree work.

Pacific Slope workers repair horizontal member of north H frame

We will provide full derails and photos in the next issue of the MRHS Newsletter (subscribe HERE if you are not already receiving the Newsletter) but we wanted to let you know that all KPH and K6KPH Morse frequencies will be active starting Saturday 31 March.  We look forward to your reports and to your contacts with K6KPH.

Clearly none of this could have happened without the financial support of True Believers around the world.  It's truly a case of your donation dollars at work!  But we have much more to do at both the receive and transmit sites to assure that our operations can continue into the future.  Any help you provide toward that end will be deeply appreciated.  Just click on the button below!
