5R     - Look for  5R8GC (QSL via DJ6SI),  5R8UJ (QSL via DF9TM)  and  5R8UR
         (QSL via DL2SWW) to  be active  from  Nosy Be (AF-057),  Madagascar
         until 12 January.
DL     - Special callsigns DR500MLE, DR1517LU, DR5LUTHER, DC500LS, DM5LUTHER
         and DL500ML will be active throughout 2017 to commemorate the 500th
         anniversary  of  the  Protestant  Reformation  initiated by  Martin
         Luther (31 October 1517).
DU     - Dindo, DU1UD and Chris, VK3FY are active as DU1UD/p from the Lubang
         Islands (OC-126) as the 6-8 January DX8DX activity from the Calagua
         Islands (OC-202) [425DXN 1338] has been cancelled because  of heavy
         seas.  QSL via M0OXO's OQRS (direct and bureau);  traditional cards
         should be sent to M0OXO  direct only. [TNX M0OXO]
E5_sc  - E51ADD  is  the  callsign  that  Erik, K7ADD  will  be  using  from
         Rarotonga (OC-013), South Cook Islands on 5-9 January and again  on
         8-18 February [425DXN 1339].Between 11 January  and  6 February  he
         will operate as E51AMF from  Manihiki (OC-014), North Cook Islands.

E5_sc  - Also active from Rarotonga will be Dick, AD7AF, who will be QRV  as
         E51WWA between 9 and 26 January.  He will operate CW and SSB on 80-
         10 metres. QSL via AD7AF and LoTW.
G      - The Cray  Valley  Radio  Society  will be  active as  GB8KW on  6-8
         January, to mark the anniversary f the  founding of  KW Electronics
         Ltd in the mid-1950s by the late Rowley Shears, G8KW. Activity will
         be on 80, 40 and 20 metres. QSL via G0UKN. [TNX M0MCV]
H4     - H44DX is the callsign used by  Darren, VK4FEDX when operating  from
         Guadalcanal  (OC-047), Solomon Islands.  He is now active as  H40DA
         from Nendo Island (OC-100), Temotu Province  until 17 January.  QSL
         both callsigns direct only to home call. [TNX The Daily DX]
HH     - Dale, N3BNA and Harry, N3FMO will be in Haiti on 13-25 January  and
         might be QRV as HH8/home calls  from Jacmel, and  as HH2/home calls
         from the QTH of HH2JR during the last two days of their trip. [TNX

OA_ssh - OA0MP will be active from the Antarctic base "Machu Picchu" on King
         George Island, South Shetlands (AN-010) sometime between  9 January
         and   31 March.  Two  members  of  ANTAR  XXIV, the  24th  Peruvian
         scientific expedition to  Antarctica, will operate  the station  in
         their spare time, with main activity on  20 and 40 metres SSB.  QSL
         via OA4O.
PY     - Joao, PY2GTA will be active holiday style as  PP5/PY2GTA from  IOTA
         group SA-026 on 7-9 January.  He will operate  from the islands  of
         Campeche during the day, and Santa Catarina in the evening. QSL via
         home call, direct or bureau.
TG     - Dick, DJ2EH will  be active as  TG9/DJ2EH  from Guatemala  on 10-24
         January. He will operate CW, RTTY and some RTTY with a focus on the

UA     - Moscow celebrates its 870th anniversary this year, as it was  first
         mentioned  in  historical  records  in  1147.  The  Radio  Marathon
         "Moscow-870" will run until  31 December, with  a  large number  of
         special callsigns expected to be active on all bands and modes.  On
         the air  this  month  will be  R870M (1-10 January),  R1238M (11-20
         January) and R1547M (21-31 January). Detailed  information  on  the
         event and the award programme can be found at www.moscow870.com.
V3     - Rich, K8NDS will be active holiday  style as V31RF  from Placencia,
         Belize from 9 January to 6 February. He will operate SSB on  40, 20
         and 17 metres. QSL direct to K8NDS. [TNX The Daily DX]
VE     - Fought in France in April 1917, the Battle of Vimy Ridge  "awakened
         a sense of national identity in Canadians" which has been described
         as "the moment when Canada leapt in spirit  from colony to nation".
         Commemorating  the  centenary of  Vimy Ridge,  VE100VIMY/VE1  (Nova
         Scotia)  and  VE100VIMY/VY2  (Prince Edward Island)  have been  QRV
         since 1 January,  and will continue  activity until  23.59 UTC on 7
         January.  The  callsign  will  then be  activated  from  the  other
         Canadian call areas, one week at a time until the end  of March  as
         follows:

         After the Great War, France ceded to Canada a  territory  amounting
         to 107 hectares (250 acres) at the top of the Ridge.  This space is
         now  a  Parks Canada National Historic site, and  on 1-9 April  the
         commemoration will continue there with two stations  operating  CW,
         SSB and RTTY on the HF bands.
         QSL for all callsigns via N7RO, bureau, Club Log's OQRS and LoTW. A

         details.
VK     - VK5CE/3 will be QRV from  Gabo Island (OC-196) on  31 January and 1
         February [425DXN 1331].  Craig  will operate  SSB on 15, 17, 20 and
         40m, and  PSK63 on 30m.  An  updated  schedule  for his  operation,
         "based on current band  conditions and  theoretical forecasts", can

         Log's OQRS; traditional cards via VK5CE, direct or bureau.
VP8    - Dave, G1OCN (VP8CLE) and  his wife  Carol, 2E1DQZ (VP8DKW) will  be
         active from various  places  in the  Falkland Islands (SA-002)  for
         three weeks starting  in mid January.  QSLs direct  only to  G1OCN;
         logsearch on Club Log. [TNX DX World]
VU     - Once again the West Bengal Radio Club (http://wbradioclub.in/) will
         provide  assistance  during the  Ganga Sagar Mela on  Sagar  Island
         (AS-153) on 9-17 January. This  is the  annual  gathering of  Hindu
         pilgrims to take a holy dip in the Ganges, where  the river  merges
         with the  Bay of Bengal.  Expect some activity on the  HF bands  as
         AU2WBR. QSL via VU2NRO.
XE     - On 28 December XF2L [425DXN 1337] was active for a few hours on  17
         metres  from  Isla de Lobos (NA-221).  Next  operations  are  being
         planned to be held  during the  South American  Lighthouses Weekend
         (17-19 February) from Isla de Sacrificios (NA-224); the  CQ  WW WPX
         SSB Contest (25-26 March) and CQ WW WPX CW Contest (27-28 May) from
         Isla de Lobos (NA-221); the IOTA Contest (29-30 July) from  Isla de
         Enmedio (NA-224); the International  Lighthouse & Lightship Weekend
         (19-20 August) from  Isla de Sacrificios (NA-224).  Activities  are
         subject to weather conditions and to  obtaining the  authorizations
         from the  National Commission of  Protected Natural Areas.  QSL via
         XE1SOV.
ZC4    - Judith, G4IAQ and Dave, G4IAR will be active from  Cyprus on  12-24
         January. They will be QRV as  ZC4JB and  ZC4DB from  the  Sovereign
         Base areas to which the public have access; when on other parts  of
         the island, they will use 5B/G4IAQ/p and 5B/G4IAR/p. QSLs direct to

DAYTON CONTEST DINNER ---> The  25th Dayton Contest Dinner  will  take place
on 20 May at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in downtown Dayton, Ohio. Tickets can be

DX SOUND CLIPS ---> Tom's (K8CX) DX sound clips for 2016  can  be  found  at
http://hamgallery.com/dx2016/.  The collection  of  226  clips (MP3  format)
covers the major DXpeditions, plus rare and  semi-rare  DX.  This  makes  19
full years of sound clips available.

IOTA NEWS ---> "This message is for you if you are one of the  many  chasers
who keep an IOTA score in a 'pending application' on  the IOTA database  and
have never  made a submission",  Roger Balister (G3KMA) wrote  on  the  IOTA
website on 30 December. "The Board of IOTA Ltd has decided that it is not in
the best interest of the IOTA Programme to continue  with a situation  where
people in this category exceed by a wide margin  the number of  participants
shown in  the  annual  Honour Roll  and Annual Listing".  Read the  complete
notice  on  www.rsgbiota.org,  along  with  the  latest  progress  report (2
January) on the Friends of IOTA appeal ("Half  a year after  our Appeal, 223
IOTA enthusiasts from 41 DXCCs  responded  generously  by donating  £20,423,
putting us at 82% of the first goal of GBP 25,000 we need to achieve").

KC4/N2TA ---> This is Mike, RW1AI, operating  from  Novolazarevskaya Base in
Antarctica. He is also active as RI1AND, and expects  to remain there  until

QSL GALLERY ---> The large collection of QSL cards  on  Les  Nouvelles  DX's
web site has been updated. Fifteen different galleries include 14,341  cards
for the ten Most  Wanted  DXCC  Entities  (2004-16),  the  62  deleted  DXCC
Entities, obsolete prefixes,  stations  from  Maghreb  from  1945  to  1962,
Allied Forces stations in Germany (1945-70), special stations  commemorating
ITU and IARU, Antarctic bases and TAAF (Terres  Australes  and  Antarctiques
Francaises), the various French DXCC island Entities in the  Pacific  Ocean,
the Indian Ocean and the Americas (from 1945 to 1970),  pre-1945  countries,
French Departments and CONUS, plus a  gallery  for  cards  not  accepted  by

SWODXA DX DINNER ---> The 32nd DX Dinner, sponsored again by  the  SouthWest
Ohio DX Association (SWODXA) and held in conjunction with  the  2017  Dayton

YASME  EXCELLENCE  AWARDS  &  SUPPORTING  GRANTS  ---> In  2008  The   Yasme
Foundation  established  the  Yasme Excellence Awards,  to be  presented  to
Individuals   who,  through  their  own  service,  creativity,  effort   and
dedication, have  made  a  significant  contribution to  amateur radio.  The
contribution may be in recognition of technical, operating or organizational
achievement, as  all  three are  necessary  for  amateur radio  to grow  and
prosper. The latest recipients, announced on 2 January, are:
* Pekka Ketonen, OH1TV, in recognition of his  many innovations, such as the
  Opposite  Voltage  Feed  concept  for  amateur  radio  antennas,  and  for
  documenting his work in English to make it widely available.
* Hani Raad, OD5TE, in recognition of his work  advancing  amateur radio  in
  Lebanon and  the  Arabic  Region  and  his  efforts  related  to  the  re-
  introduction of amateur radio examinations in Lebanon.
The Board of Directors of the Yasme Foundation has also announced  a  number
of   supporting  grants  in  furtherance  of  its  goal  of  supporting  the
development of amateur radio:
* A further grant to the Radio Club d'Haiti for the acquisition of radios to
  be used for emergency communications
* A grant to the Mongolian Radio Sports Federation  for the  acquisition  of
  laptop computers  for  use  in  the  Federation's  High  Speed  Telegraphy
  competition
* A grant to the  Lighthouse for the  Blind  and  Visually Impaired  for the
  acquisition  of  amateur  radio  equipment  for  the  station at  the  new
  headquarters in San Francisco, California
* A grant to the Amateur Radio Society of Dominica for  the  acquisition  of
  amateur radio training materials and the donation of a transceiver, power
  supply, tuner and headset
* A grant to WRTC 2018 for the sponsorship of the Ham Widows' Ball
* A grant to the Radio Amateur Society of Thailand for support of the  HS0AC
  club station
A  substantial revision of the  YASME Foundation's  website  (www.yasme.org)
has been completed. The new website contains information on Yasme's history,
past  recipients  of the  Yasme Excellence Award,  prior grants,  the  Yasme
Awards and an updated listing of eligible call signs. The website also makes
available complete copies of "The Yasme News" published in the late 1950s by
Dick Spenceley, KV4AA (SK),  all prior  Yasme press releases and information
about the  Yasme  book authored by Jim Cain, K1TN. [TNX W6SZN]
