The Concerned Truckdriver
We were 45 miles into a long travel day. The shoulder of the road had disappeared a while back and the trucks got bigger as the road seemed to narrow. Funny the way the constant hills got steeper as we were trying to find the correct road to lead us to our next reservation.
One truck passed way to close for comfort, probably for his comfort as well. He pulled over to the side of the road and waited for us. He reached into the cab and pulled out a crusty lime green dayglo vest and told us we need to wear these and gave it to Bruce. This man was genuinely concerned, not angry. We have since replaced the vest with new ones for us and passed his forward.
We finally found our Cabana at the end of 4 miles of rock and dirt road. It was an older structure on the edge of a peaceful bay next to a bird sanctuary. We arrived with the tide out and it looked like mud flats, By the next morning it was covered in shallow water with white swans that had black necks, seagulls the size of turkeys, crane type of bird and various small ones. The cabin had a much needed wood stove and a goose down bed to cover us.
We then moved forward again, to Ancud on Chiloe the large island at the top of Patagonia. From there we went to see the penguins. The babies are now 3 month old and out on the water with their parents. Some of the parents are molting and those who have finished are shinny and clean in their new tuxedos.
The town was having a Custombrisias, like a small county fair where there were prize animals, local crafts, local beer and wine, and the church and school groups were cooking in boths. These strong German descended mamas were making amazing batches of empanadas and fathers were roasting Cerdo Asado (pig on a stick roasted over wood and hand turned). Everyone seemed to be having a wonderful time. The smells were amazing and the home baked desserts and ice creams tempting. The local band was on the stage and the German songs were sung in Spanish. We had a blast watching the families and especially the interaction between the old people.
Now in Quinchi a small coastal town, a sleepy village with a large salmon farming industry. The bay is beautiful and was very peaceful tonight while we had dinner on the top deck overlooking the beach. This like all beach towns is perched on a cliff, the approach was continually rolling hills and a steep climb, thinking you are going to be into town, and then a few more just like the last climb before you actually get that amazing view of the bay.
Tenaun was the next stop along the coast. This small town was 9,000 people and we stayed in a guest house. We were cold when we walked into the large bright kitchen, lunch was cooking on the wood stove and the greeting was warm and welcoming. We ate with the family for our 3 meals there. It is always interesting to be in a home. The TV in the kitchen was a 50 inch and none in the living room.
We expected Dalecuhue to also be a quiet town…. We were so wrong! This busy summer tourist town was like Cape May New Jersey 25 years ag. A board walk, more trinket and artisan booths than inhabitants. Salmon ceviche made in front of you. The lady was sharpening her knife on the cement curb, she did wipe it off on her apron. From there you could take the ferry to a close small island a bit more rural and we found the small village famous for their oysters.
Castro was next the largest city on Chiloe. From here we took a bus north again for an 11 hour ride to Villarrica in the lake district.
The Volcano looms above the lake always in a light haze. Sometimes you turn a corner and there it is at the end of the street, a constant present. They also have a board walk along the lake shore and a black sand beach.( artificial beach where they brought the sand in) The water is warmer in the lake than the ocean. There were wave with white caps when we arrived from the wind and now it is warm and wonderful. The trees here are so large, the grass green and the sky a silky blue. The evening stays light until 9:30 pm That is when the streets are the most crowded with tourists, families are wandering around until midnight with small children that have napped during the heat of the day.
We have seen many bird, only 1 dead snake and a PuliPuli a small deerish about 30 inches tall that moves like a deer and has a face like a cat. At the ocean on an early morning walk we saw a dolphin playing in the surf.

20 February to 30 March. He will operate PSK, CW, SSB and possibly

Main activity will be during the RSGB Commonwealth Contest (9-10
March), but he hopes to do some operating also before and after the

13 March. He will operate CW, SSB, RTTY and possibly FT8 on all

end and the P29NI activity from Daru Island (OC-153) was cancelled [425DXN
1449] because some of the equipment was stolen, and what the operators had
left "was insufficient to put a station together". The P29VCX logs for the
OC-025 operation are safe and sound, though, and QSL requests will be

YASME FOUNDATION NEWEST DIRECTOR ---> The Board of Directors of The Yasme
Foundation (http://www.yasme.org/) is pleased to announce that it has
elected James Brooks, 9V1YC, as the newest Yasme Foundation Director. James
was first licensed in the United States in September 1978 but has been
active for the last 30 years as 9V1YC in Singapore. A BSEE graduate of the
University of Texas at Austin, James owns a television post-production
company based in Singapore that produces for networks such as Discovery,
National Geographic, and HBO Asia. He has been a competitor at WRTC and led
several DXpeditions to remote areas of the world, some of which are
documented in a series of videos he has been making since 1997. James is on
the council of the Singapore Amateur Radio Transmitting Society, a co-
founder of the Asia-Pacific Sprint, and a member of the CQ DX Hall of Fame.

aged 76. First licensed in 1978, he was an accomplished DXer and a reliable

V31BR, H75A (NA-209, all-time new one), V47LDX and NI5DX/p from various IOTA

6W - Willy, ON4AVT will be active gain as 6W7/ON4AVT from Senegal from
20 February to 30 March. He will operate PSK, CW, SSB and possibly
FT8 on various bands, 60 metres included. QSL via home call, bureau

C5 - Don, G3XTT will be active as C56DF from the Gambia on 5-12 March.
Main activity will be during the RSGB Commonwealth Contest (9-10
March), but he hopes to do some operating also before and after the
contest. This will be a CW only operation, low power with wires
from a rooftop apartment. It is unlikely there will be space for 80
or 160m antennas. QSL via LoTW, Club Log's OQRS or direct to home

E5_sc - Hans-Martin, DK2HM will be active as E51HMK from Rarotonga (OC-013)
South Cook Islands on 14-22 March (http://southcook2019.com/). He
will operate SSB and FT8 on 80-10 metres. QSL via Club Log's OQRS,
LoTW, eQSL, or via home call, direct or bureau.
E6 - Alex, 5B4ALX will be active as E6ET from Niue (OC-040) from 18
March to 2 April. He will operate SSB, CW, RTTY and FT8 on 160, 60,
40, 30, 20, 17, 15, 10 and 6 metres, and will participate in the CQ
WPX SSB Contest (SOSB 20m LP). E6ET will operate FT8 using a multi
answer protocol (not to be confused with the "Fox & Hound" mode),
with a focus on 20m during his day and 40/60m during his night

EM_ant - Roman, UT7UA is active for one year as EM1UA and/or EM1U from the
Ukrainian "Vernadsky" Research Station located on Galindez Island
(AN-006), Antarctica. Roman's licence is valid until 1 February

FG - Gildas, F6HMQ and Michel, F6GWV will be active again as FG/F6HMQ
and FG/F6GWV from Guadeloupe (NA-102) from 22 February to 10 March.
QSL via home calls. They will participate in the ARRL DX SSB

FK - Arnaud, JG1XMV will be active again as FK/JG1XMV from New Caledonia
between 23 February and 10 March. He will operate SSB on 40-15
metres from the main island of Grande Terre (OC-032), with "a good
chance of spending a few days" on Mare Island (OC-033). Updates

HK0 - Jean, VE2FDJ will be active as 5J0JC from Providencia (NA-049) on
15-27 February. He will operate SSB on 80, 40, 20 and 6 metres. QSL

HR - Dennis, W1UE and Rudy, N2WQ are active as HQ9X from Roatan Island
(NA-057) until 26 February, including participation in the ARRL DX

I - A team from ARI Modena will be active as IG9MO from Lampedusa
Island (AF-019) from 28 March to 2 April. They will operate on SSB,
CW and digital modes on the HF bands, and will participate in the

T2 - Tony, 3D2AG is "almost confirmed" to be active again as T2AR from
Funafuti, Tuvalu (OC-015) on 22-27 February. He plans to focus on
the low bands. QSL direct to 3D2AG (see qrz.com for PayPal
instructions). He does not use LoTW or Club Log.
T31 - Ron, PA3EWP reports that the T31EU DXpedition to Kanton Island,
Central Kiribati is delayed by 24 hours due to bad weather. Now the
Team should be leaving Tarawa (T30) on 16 February at 19 UTC.
V3 - Will, AA4NC will be active as V31NC from Belize from 21 February to
13 March. He will operate CW, SSB, RTTY and possibly FT8 on all
bands, and will participate in the ARRL DX SSB Contest. QSL via

W - Once again members of the Palos Verdes ARC will operate as K6PV/6
from Santa Catalina Island (NA-066) on 21-24 February. Plans are to
operate SSB, CW, and FT8 on 160-15 metres with three stations. QSL

XV - Jacek, SP5APW will be active as XV9JK from Thu Island (AS-157),
Vietnam on 10-16 March. He will operate SSB mainly on 17 and 20
metres; in case of bad propagation, he will operate FT8 on 40 and
30 metres. He might be QRV as XV9JK/p from mainland Vietnam on 6-8

ANTARCTIC ACTIVITY WEEK ---> The Worldwide Antarctic Program has announced
that the 16th Antarctic Activity Week will be held on 16-24 February. The
aim of this annual event is to promote worldwide interest in the Antarctic

ARRL INTERNATIONAL DX CONTEST (CW) ---> Object of the contest is for W/VE
amateurs to work as many stations in as many DXCC Entities as possible on
160, 80, 40, 20, 15, and 10 metre bands, while DX stations (also including
KH6, KL7, CY9 and CY0) work as many W/VE amateurs in as many of the 48
contiguous states and provinces as possible (complete rules can be found at
http://www.arrl.org/arrl-dx). This year's event will be held on 16-17

P29VCX ---> The IOTA DXpedition to Manus Island (OC-025) came to an abrupt
end and the P29NI activity from Daru Island (OC-153) was cancelled [425DXN
1449] because some of the equipment was stolen, and what the operators had
left "was insufficient to put a station together". The P29VCX logs for the
OC-025 operation are safe and sound, though, and QSL requests will be
processed as soon as the cards are printed. QSL via SM6CVX (direct or

XZ2C ---> Yuki, JH1NBN was active as XZ2C from Myanmar on 15 February. He is
allowed to operate all modes on 15, 12, 10 and 6 metres with 25 watts. He

ZY2FM ---> The 15-17 February operation from Ilha da Moela (SA-071) [425DXN

YASME FOUNDATION NEWEST DIRECTOR ---> The Board of Directors of The Yasme
Foundation (http://www.yasme.org/) is pleased to announce that it has
elected James Brooks, 9V1YC, as the newest Yasme Foundation Director. James
was first licensed in the United States in September 1978 but has been
active for the last 30 years as 9V1YC in Singapore. A BSEE graduate of the
University of Texas at Austin, James owns a television post-production
company based in Singapore that produces for networks such as Discovery,
National Geographic, and HBO Asia. He has been a competitor at WRTC and led
several DXpeditions to remote areas of the world, some of which are
documented in a series of videos he has been making since 1997. James is on
the council of the Singapore Amateur Radio Transmitting Society, a co-
founder of the Asia-Pacific Sprint, and a member of the CQ DX Hall of Fame.

+ SILENT KEY + William M. "Buzz" Loeschman, NI5DX passed away on 12 February
aged 76. First licensed in 1978, he was an accomplished DXer and a reliable
QSL manager for a large number of stations. A founding member of the Island
Radio Expedition Foundation (IREF), over the years he operated as J87CQ,
V31BR, H75A (NA-209, all-time new one), V47LDX and NI5DX/p from various IOTA
and NPOTA sites.
