Bouvet Island News

The saga of reaching Bouvet goes on... SAD NEWS. Excerpts from a very long press release dated March 26th, the 3Y0I team was just 70 nautical miles off Bouvet Island, and the ship was "hit by a series of 11+ meters (36+ ft) tall waves + wind exceeding 83 knots/h (approx. 160 km/h). The fierce oceanic forces swept past the upper deck, taking one of the radars, including VSAT, VHF and HF marine antennas, off the mast and throwing them all overboard. The hit was so hard the vessel tilted as much as 45°." On March 27th, it was reported that all team members and crew were safe, but "with lack of the most important navigational tools, the captain declared it was not safe to navigate and they needed to go back to Cape Town to secure both all participants on the board, their equipment and the vessel's gear." Also from press release, the 3Y0I team stated that the the "3Y0I Expedition is NOT cancelled – we don't give up that easily".... The "3Y0I’s events will be long discussed and analyzed by the Team to 'attack' the island one more time – as soon as possible –again all marked with 'safety-first' principles." To read the complete Press Release #4 written by Stan, SP8S, the 3Y0I Press officer, see: https://bouvetoya.org/3yoi-postponed While this was being written, two more press releases were posted (one short and one very long) by Stan, SP8S, on March 28th. Enjoy! 3Y0I: POSTPONED ---> "On March 26 the vessel had been approaching a Cyclonal storm wandering nearby Bouvet Island", the 3Y0I Press Officer posted to the DXpedition's website. "The captain analyzed the latest weather reports indicating a chance to break through the storm - it hadn't been that strong at that time. Unfortunately, the storm developed and intensified in a matter of an hour. Around 5-6 o'clock GMT, just 70 nautical miles off Bouvet island, the ship has been hit by a series of 11+ meters (36+ ft) tall waves + wind exceeding 83 knots/h (approx. 160 km/h). The fierce oceanic forces swept past the upper deck, taking one of the radars, including VSAT, VHF and HF marine antennas, off the mast and throwing them all overboard. The hit was so hard the vessel tilted as much as 45 degrees". Under such circumstances "the captain of the MV Atlantic Tuna had to take a difficult but responsible decision to take a course back to Cape Town, South Africa". The 3Y0I DXpedition is not cancelled, though. "Once they reach Cape Town and go through a detailed technical inspection of the vessel", the 3Y0I Team Leader (Dom, 3Z9DX) "will decide when and how the DXpedition will take place again. Repeat: we're definitely talking about rescheduling the expedition to the nearest possible and reliable term, not aborting or suspending our plans". Read the latest updates on https://bouvetoya.org/blog/: - "3Y0I to be continued"! (Press Release #6, 28 March) - "Hams simply rock" (Press Release #5, 27 March) - "3Y0I postponed" (Press Release #4, 27 March) - "Bouvet vs. Hams 2:0?" (Press Release #3, 27 March) - "Furious 50s, how are you?" (Press Release #2, 25 March) CASS AWARD ---> The annual Cass Awards (http://www.cassaward.com/) honour the wisdom and spirit of Cass WA6AUD (SK) and encourage DXpeditions to maximize the number of DXers worked with a Plaque for the single-operator DXpedition that works the most unique callsigns within 2 weeks or less, and a Plaque for the "unlimited" DXpedition that works the most unique callsigns. Janusz Wegrzyn, SP9FIH has won (for the second year in a row) the 2018 Single-Operator Cass Award "by working 8257 unique stations during his one- man DXpedition to St. Eustatius Island as PJ5/SP9FIH". Yuris Petersons YL2GM, Kaspars Uztics YL1ZF and Girts Budis YL2KL "worked 18,812 unique stations as 3C0W on Annobon Island, winning the first Unlimited Cass Award and demonstrating an outstanding effort to log as many DXers as possible". CY0C: SABLE ISLAND 2020 ---> Permission has been granted for a DXpedition to Sable Island (NA-063) sometime in in autumn 2020. The team for the August 2019 CY9C DXpedition to St. Paul Island (https://cy9c.com/) [425DXN 1451] will be the primary makeup of the Sable team. "The permit process took over a year of emailing, phone calls, and furnishing documents. Sable at this point is no longer easily 'permitted' for Ham Radio DXpeditions, as the policies have changed with the change in administration. In fact our permit finally was graciously authorized as a 'one time special use permit'. We believe that it is very probable that permits in the future may be essentially 'nil' for a very long time. Among other policies, visitors to the island are not permitted overnight stays. Thankfully, we have been authorized to stay there for 7-8 days ($300 per person per day). We are grateful and excited and look forward to meeting the challenge of a sizeable operation as if it were the last one for a very long time". DXCC YEARBOOK ---> The 2017 ARRL DXCC Yearbook, which includes the Clinton B. DeSoto Challenge top scorers and the Annual Listing, can be found at http://www.arrl.org/files/file/DXCC/DXCCYearbook/DXCC%20YEARBOOK%202018.pdf. The Annual Listing of DXCC membership contains the call signs and credited totals for new awards and endorsements during the calendar year period from 1 January through 31 December 2018. The DXCC Honor Roll includes those who are within 9 entities of the ""current" Entity count for Mixed, Phone, CW, and Digital modes. As of 31 December 2018, there were 340 Entities on the DXCC List, and entry level DXCC Honor Roll was achieved at level 331. IOTA DXPEDITIONER OF THE YEAR 2018 ---> The inaugural Island Radio Expedition Foundation's (IREF) "IOTA DXpeditioner of the Year" Award will be presented at the 34th DX Dinner, to be held on 17 May at the Marriott Hotel in Dayton (tickets can be purchased at http://swodxaevents.org/). The DX Dinner is held in conjunction with the Dayton Hamvention and is sponsored by the Southwest Ohio DX Association (SWODXA). The new award from IREF will join the list of awards presented annually at the DX Dinner, including DXpedition of the Year, DXpeditioner of the Year (DXCC) and the presentation of the CQ DX Hall of Fame inductees. Details on the "IOTA DXpeditioner of the Year" award can be found at https://irefradio.com/activator-award/. NORTH MACEDONIA ---> After nearly three decades of disagreement on the name of the country called Macedonia (otherwise known as FYROM, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia), the dispute between Greece (SV) and Macedonia (Z3) was settled in June 2018 with an agreement that the country should rename itself "Republic of North Macedonia" (Republika Severna Makedonija). After the agreement was ratified by both sides, it entered into force on 12 February 2019. DXCC wise, only the Entity name has changed. You will find it listed as "North Macedonia" on LoTW, and as "North Macedonia (Republic of)" in the March 2019 edition of the ARRL DXCC List. The DXCC "country code" number remains 502. =========================== *** 4 2 5 D X N E W S *** ******* QSL ROUTES ******* =========================== Edited by I1JQJ & IK1ADH Direttore Responsabile I2VGW =================================================================== CALL MANAGER CALL MANAGER CALL MANAGER =================================================================== 3B9FR M0OXO CS2TCB CT1ARR OD5VB EA5GL 3V8CB LX1NO CS2TCM CT2JYO OG60IPA OH4MDY 3W3B E21EIC CS2TCS CT7ABF OL50MR OK1MR 3W9JF EA5GL CS2TCT CT1ARR P3X 5B4AMM 4D3X W3HNK D4Z HB9DUR [d] P40L WA3FRP 4K6FO DC9RI D4Z IK2NCJ [b] P44W N2MM 4L6QL RW6HS DL1250G DL8SCU PD38EU PD5MVH 4L8A K1BV DR50DIG DH1PAL PJ2DX W0CG 5B4AGN M0URX E51HMK DK2HM PJ4/KK9A WD9DZV 5P1PT DL1PT E6AF SP9FIH PJ4K KU9C 5T5PA PA5X E6ET IZ4AMS PJ4KY M0URX 6E0P XE1EE E7CW E73ESP PJ7TM K2GSJ 6W/IK5BSC IK2DUW EA8/G3XAQ G3SWH PS2T K3IRV 6W/IV3FSG IK3GES EE100V EA5YJ R108M RK3LC 8P6DR G3RWL EG2AZF EA2URZ R125IL RZ5D 9H3FC G4UDG EG8TSI EA8URE R1961G RV3LZ 9H3HI DL7VFM [d] EH1FSJ EA2DVN RD0B/p RD0B 9H3HI EU4CK [b] EH5TYF EA5RKB SI9AM ON3UN 9H3JD DL7VFM EM1U UT7UA T88US JF1OCQ 9K9A EC6DX EO65QRC UR4QZZ TG9AJR M0URX 9M19TEA 9M2CDX EP2C EA5GL TM29FFA F5KOU 9M2CNC G4ZFE EP2LMA EA5GL TO2BC DL7BC 9V1YC W5UE EP4HR IK2RZQ TY2AC DL9USA A35JP JA0RQV EV125IL EV6C UP0L DL8KAC A71YY M0OXO GB100RAF G8FC V31RF K8NDS B5/IK7YTT IW7EGQ HC5TLM HC5VF VA7XW/VE1 VE7ACN BW2/JP1RIW BM2JCC HF50ZAT SP3ZAT VE3LYC/KL7 VE3LYC C4W 5B4WN IG9MO IK4ALM VE7ACN/VE1 VE7ACN C7A UA3DX II0BIKE 9A5URI VP2ETE W3HNK C91CCY K3IRV IS0/OM8A OM2VL VP5/AF3K N2OO CJ3A VE3AT J28PJ F1TMY VP5/W2TT N2OO CN2AM M0OXO J43N SV1NK VP8CTR DL5EBE CN2CL CT1QP JT5DX JT1CO VY0ERC M0OXO CN2FA RN2FA JW6VDA OH6VDA XZ2C JH1NBN CN2MA LY5W LY800SMG LY2NZ YO3IPA YO3AAS CN3A IK2OHG LZ50ZF LZ2UW YU73BFG YU8A CR5O CT7AJL MJ5Z M0CFW ZL7C ZL2AYZ CS2CTS CT1ARR NA8O/KH2 JK1FNL ZV1FF PS8RV 6Y5KB Kasimir Bastian, Gruenaecker Str. 39, 71069 Sindelfingen, Germany EA5GL Pedro Miguel Ronda Monsell, C/ Maximiliano Thous 16-24, 46009 Valencia, Spain G8FC RAF Amateur Radio Society, Royal Air Force Cosford, Wolverhampton, WV7 3EX, United Kingdom IZ4AMS Alessandro Gromme, Via G.M. Whats New @ WWV

The following is fromMilitary Monitoring Post

Military Monitoring Post

DOD Provisional Timeslot on WWV and WWVH.

WWV is going into the military broadcast business (sorta)? We found below this morning on the US Army MARS Facebook Page:

From April 20 to 3 May, WWV and WWVH will broadcast a DOD message at 10 minutes past the hour on WWV and at 50 minutes past the hour on WWVH. This April-May time period coincides with the Vital Connection interoperability exercise being held in Wisconsin. Future timeslots will coincide with the Vital Connection exercise Ohio in June; DOD COMEX 19-3 in Aug and the DOD COMEX 19-4 in Oct.

Following the proof of concept this year, we anticipate that the DOD broadcast time slot will become year-round full time. As mentioned above future broadcast may occur prior to selected DOD and Northcom exercises.

This broadcast timeslot will voice announce upcoming exercises and how the amateur radio community can become involved in various exercises. To begin, the broadcast messages will likely be static...future exercises we hope to be able to update the broadcast throughout the exercise as notional conditions change.
The broadcast message will ask listeners to provide reception reports and feedback to a specified URL.

Tune into WWV/H on 2.5, 5, 10, 15, and 20 MHz and submit a reception report and requested feedback.
And in a related WWV event this report in a recent ARRL Newsletter:

WWV Centennial Special Event Will Use WW0WWV
With its funding secure for another year, WWV, the world's oldest continuously operating radio station, will have extra reason to celebrate its centennial this fall. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and the Northern Colorado Amateur Radio Club (NCARC) have teamed up to organize 100th-anniversary events. A memorandum of understanding is pending. The WWV Committee has announced that the call sign WW0WWV was granted on February 23 to the WWV Amateur Radio Club for use during the Amateur Radio special event, planned to run September 28 - October 2, with operators on the air around the clock. NCARC predicts the effort will require "hundreds" of volunteer operators.

”The 100th anniversary is an occasion to celebrate radio and our understanding of the electromagnetic spectrum, and an opportunity to help people everywhere appreciate what radio does in their everyday lives," said Dave Swartz, WODAS, who has been spearheading the on-the-air event.

The WWV Committee met on February 22, with representatives of NCARC and NIST on hand, to further firm up plans for the centennial celebratory events. Although the US government cannot fund any Amateur Radio special event expenses, club members will be allowed to use a 15-acre parcel on WWV property, Swartz has explained. The operating site lies outside the security fence.
For its part, NIST will focus on plans for an October 1 recognition ceremony and an open house at the radio station north of Fort Collins.

The Continuing Bouvet Saga

Bouvet 2 and Hams zero - so far.

The captain of the ship that 3Y0I is using has decided to return to Cape Town for repairs.  They hope to get them done in time to return to Bouvet in April.  If not they will re-schedule for next season.

https://bouvetoya.org/3yoi-postponed/

3YØI POSTPONED

And yet! The captain of the MV Atlantic Tuna had to take a difficult but responsible decision to take a course back to Cape Town, South Africa. But the 3YØI Expedition is NOT canceled – we don’t give up that easily 😉

I just had a long conversation with Dom 3Z9DX on board on the MV Atlantic Tuna. The seas calmed down enough to let them do a proper technical inspection of damages caused by the severe cyclonic storm last night. Here are more details on the latest dramatic events.

On March 26, 2019, the vessel has been approaching a cyclonal storm wandering nearby Bouvet Island. The captain analyzed the latest weather reports indicating a chance to break through the storm – it hasn’t been that strong at that time. Unfortunately, the storm developed and intensified in a matter of an hour. Around 5-6 o’clock GMT, just 70 nautical miles off Bouvet island, the ship has been hit by a series of 11+ meters (36+ ft) tall waves + wind exceeding 83 knots/h (approx. 160 km/h). The fierce oceanic forces swept past the upper deck, taking one of the radars, including VSAT, VHF and HF marine antennas, off the mast and throwing them all overboard. The hit was so hard the vessel tilted as much as 45° (but that’s still safe in terms of the vessel’s construction).

CY0C Sable Island DXpedition

Some time ago, we had scheduled fall of 2019 for Sable Island DXpedition. Due to circumstances we had to reschedule to 2020. Hopefully this will be better for propagation.
The permit process took over a year of emailing, phone calls, and furnishing documents. Sable at this point is no longer easily "permitted" for Ham Radio DXpeditions, as the policies have changed with the change in administration. In fact our permit finally was graciously authorized as a "one time special use permit". We believe that it is very probable that permits in the future may be essentially "nil" for a very long time.
Among other policies, visitors to the island are not permitted overnight stays. Thankfully, we have been authorized to stay there for 7 - 8 days ($300 per person per day). We are grateful and excited and look forward to meeting the challenge of a sizeable operation as if it were the last one for a very long time.
The team for the upcoming CY9C St. Paul Island August Dxpedition will be the primary makeup of the Sable team. A "SABLE"
information page will be maintained on the St. Paul website, (https://cy9c.com).
This news update is provided at the request of Murray, WA4DAN - Sable and St. Paul Team Leader.

NO Joy for Bouvet Landing

It seems that there is trouble brewing down in the southern ocean for this Bouvet Team. The 3Y0I DXpedition has encountered a huge storm. The ship has lost some antennas and is maneuvering to avoid the worst of the storm.  Landing will be delayed a few days with a slight possibility that they may have to return to South Africa for repairs.
Have a look at their website for a good look at the weather picture.

Bouvet Island DXpedition news
They are on their way!

If you missed our special bulletin, the 3Y0I team is now on their way to Bouvet Island aboard the "Atlantic Tuna". They left Cape Town, South Africa, on March 19th, at approx. 0600 UTC.
As this was being written, The 3Y0I team is over halfway there. Look for them to sign E51DOM/mm on their way there and back from the island. They are expected to travel to Bouvet in about 7 days, possibly around March 26th, late local time.
Their landing on the island will be "strictly dependent on weather conditions" upon their arrival. So, their estimated date, as 3Y0I, on the air might be about the last few days of March. REMEMBER, this is subject to change due to sea and weather conditions – safety first!
The 3Y0I team plans to stay on the island for at least 2 weeks, with an option to extend the stay to 3-4 weeks, if weather and other factors permit.
On March 21st, Stan Strzyzewski, SP8S, posted a very large press release (listed as Press Release #1 and titled "Welcome Roaring Forties!"), which contains a brief satellite conversation with Dom, 3Z9DX, the 3Y0I leader.
It details the sea conditions that the 3Y0I team is currently enduring, a brief description about the planning of this operation over the last three months, and the weather and the team's planning for a safe landing on Bouvet. To read the complete press release, go:

Bloemendal shortwave station's final transmission

The South African Radio League report Sentech will close its Bloemendal Shortwave Broadcasting station on 30 March, which means that today's Amateur Radio Today will be the last programme to be transmitted on the 7 and 17 MHz broadcast bands.
Amateur Radio Today will however still be available on 7 082 kHz from Durban and on many repeaters around South Africa and from the SARL home page on www.sarl.org.za.

Sentech inherited South Africa's Bloemendal shortwave radio station near Meyerton when Radio RSA was closed down. Radio RSA started its broadcast on 1 May 1966 and by 1976 the station transmitted for 36 hours a week in twelve languages including English, French, Portuguese, and Afrikaans. The service was discontinued in 1992. The only transmission that survived the close down was a broadcast into Africa, renamed Channel Africa. The SABC also transmits Radio Sonder Grense (RSG) on shortwave to the Northern Cape. Sentech also took over the sponsorship of Amateur Radio Today.

To increase coverage on HF in the Southern African area the SARL is looking at transmitting the programme on 7 MHz from more locations like the Western Cape, Free State and Gauteng to compliment the 7082 kHz transmission by Louis, ZS5LP from Durban. The frequencies being considered are in the band between 7 100 and 7 200 kHz. On Monday evenings 80 metres is also under consideration.
Radio Amateurs willing to offer their services on Sundays at 10:00 CAT and/or on Monday evenings on 80 metres are invited to send their contact details to artoday@sarl.org.za.

The SARL could not make this announcement earlier as Sentech was unable to confirm their planned close down and requested the SARL not to announce the closure earlier.
